Back when the WWE was known as the WWWF (that's not a typo), Bruno Sammartino was the greatest and most popular wrestler in the promotion. In fact, he held the WWWF Heavyweight Championship for nine years, which would be unheard of today, from 1963-71. Much of Sammartino's popularity was due to his being a tough Italian-American wrestler in the northeast, to which many of his fans could relate.
